Frequently Asked Questions
Getting Started
Q: How do I set up my first habit?
A: Open the app and follow the conversational prompts. You'll choose a task name, set your active days, and configure reminder times in the Quick Settings panel.
Q: What does "66 days" mean?
A: Based on research from University College London, it takes an average of 66 days for a behavior to become automatic. Our app tracks your progress through 4 stages: forming → developing → solidifying → automatic.
Features & Settings
Q: How do I change my task settings?
A: Tap the gear icon (⚙️) in the top right corner to open Quick Settings. Here you can modify your task name, time range, active days, and reminder intensity.
Q: Can I disable notifications?
A: Yes, two ways:
- In-app: Quick Settings → Reminders → Adjust intensity to "Minimal"
- System-wide: iPhone Settings → Excuse You → Notifications → Toggle off
Q: What's the difference between streak and habit strength?
A: Your streak counts consecutive successful days. Your habit strength measures how automatic the behavior is becoming, based on the 66-day asymptotic curve. Strength decays gradually if you miss days, but doesn't reset to zero like traditional streaks.
Privacy & Data
Q: Where is my data stored?
A: All your habit data stays on your device. Nothing is uploaded to servers or cloud storage. This ensures complete privacy - we literally cannot see your data.
Q: What data does Firebase collect?
A: Only anonymous technical data:
- Crashlytics: Crash reports (always enabled for stability)
- Performance: App speed metrics (always enabled)
- Analytics: Usage patterns (DISABLED by default, opt-in only via Settings)
Q: How do I reset my habit data?
A: Since all data is stored locally, simply delete the app from your iPhone. Reinstalling starts fresh. There is no data backup or recovery - this is intentional for privacy.
Q: Can I export my data?
A: Not currently available in v1.0. This feature may be added in future updates if requested.
Troubleshooting
Q: The app crashed. What should I do?
A: Restart the app. Crash reports are automatically sent to help us fix the issue. Your habit data is saved and will be restored.
Q: Notifications aren't working.
A: Check these settings:
- iPhone Settings → Excuse You → Notifications → Ensure "Allow Notifications" is ON
- In-app: Quick Settings → Check that reminder intensity is not "Off"
- Ensure Focus Mode/Do Not Disturb isn't blocking notifications
- Check that your active days include today
Q: The app won't open or is frozen.
A: Try these steps:
- Force quit the app (swipe up from app switcher) and reopen
- Restart your iPhone
- If problem persists, contact support with your iOS version and iPhone model
About the App
Q: Is this a medical or therapeutic app?
A: No. Excuse You is a productivity tool for building habits. It is not a substitute for medical advice, mental health treatment, or professional therapy.
Q: Can I track multiple habits?
A: Currently, v1.0 focuses on one primary habit at a time. This intentional design prevents habit overload and follows research showing single-habit focus increases success rates.
Q: Will there be Android/web versions?
A: Potentially in the future. Currently focusing on iOS to ensure quality and privacy.
